Not A Snafu Friday

Heading off to bed one night, we came into the kitchen and found this scene on the floor!
A new package of gum had been left on top of the microwave and someone's nose found it!  Angus loves mint WAY more than cat nip.
Luckily, he just sniffed and bit into a few pieces. All pieces were pretty much intact except for teeth marks.

The vet told us we were lucky he didn't ingest any because some sugarless gums contain a highly toxic chemical called xylitol.

Just to be safe...

Move over Snafu, Angus is coming!
Plenty of room left...yeah...

  2. We've never seen a cat who likes gum, but it makes sense that the mint would be the draw.

We think you need another microwave. Or two.

  3. Oh my goodness - Snafu!! I'm so glad you are ok and didn't eat any of that gum - it;s bad for you!

A great way to use the microwave btw!

  4. I'm glad that the kitty did not ingest the gum. I a wondering how healthy the gum is for humans if they put such toxic chemicals in it. Perhaps the sugar is worth having compared to what replaces it. Deb

  5. Oh my word...Snafu must have had a hint of bad salmon breath. I love the microwave as a safe!! Too funny.
I didn't know that sugarless gum was toxic thanks for the heads up.

  7. We're glad he didn't eat any.

The last picture made me chuckle though. We use our microwave for much the same thing nowadays.

  8. Looks like you are going to need one microwave for cooking in (or thawing etc) and one as a "lockbox"!

I am surprised about the xylitol being toxic for cats - it is fine for people. something new to learn every day.

  14. oh boy. see the pile of things adding up in your microwave.

We are glad that Angus didn't ingest anything. My kitty Flip loves to lick scotch tape or stickers (the tacky side). I think he likes the taste of it. I have to hide all the tape and stickers from him. The cat carrier we have came with a huge sticker on one side. I had to rip it off and clean out the remnant or he would keep licking it.

  15. Firstly, we think it's kinda funny that he likes MINT! And furry happy to hear he didn't EAT any of it and get a hurty bellie! Too funny Angus!

  16. We are glad that no one got into it. We knew about xylitol but it didn't even occur to us til you mentioned it. But it is true - a lot of minty stuff also has xylitol sometimes - gum, mints, toothpaste.

And we use the microwave as a safe for stuff too, though usually not for long periods of time.

  19. Angus just wants fresh breath. Our Moms stash things in our microwave once in awhile too. Now we know why!

  24. Well that's a little scary. I'm so paranoid about what we leave out because we have 2 kitties that constantly get into everything too. How do you use the microwave??
